Sustainability Every pocket starts as a Barcelona banner.
One product, cut from advertising PVC the city has taken down, shipped without soil or a plant inside it. Below is what that saves on every canvas today, and the four targets we have put a date on.
What it is made of What we are aiming for 1999 Demano has been recutting Barcelona’s retired advertising banners since 1999, and official city banners since 2000. demano.net Our pledge We build one object and keep it in use. The pocket is cut from a banner Barcelona took down, the canvas travels without anything alive inside it, and every part unscrews so a repair beats a replacement. Here is what that adds up to on each canvas, and where we have committed to be by 2028.
Bill of materials
Four parts, and where each one comes from.
Open any panel.
The pocket A banner that already did its job.
Recycled PVC, cut in Barcelona by Demano, who have turned the city’s retired advertising banners into objects since 1999 and worked with the city council on official banners since 2000. Each pocket carries a fragment of a printed poster, so yours is the only one like it.
The board 02 The plant 03 In the box 04 01 The pocket + 02 The board + Wood you can unscrew.
Flat, light and finished so the hardware drives in and comes back out. Nothing is glued shut, which is why a worn pocket costs you one part instead of a whole canvas.
03 The plant + You buy it a street away.
The canvas arrives as hardware, so your plant travels from a local grower to your wall instead of sitting in a dark box for three days. Pick anything that suits 1.8 litres and it will settle in the week you hang it.
04 In the box + Board, pocket, fixings. Nothing else.
Ordinary substrate and any 1.8 litre plant will do, and every screw and anchor is a size your local hardware shop stocks. Keeping this alive never routes back through us.
Per canvas, today What one canvas already changes.
Four figures you can check against the product itself. Each one is a design decision we made before the first canvas shipped.

Printed PVC, already weathered, recut instead of landfilled: 975.5 cm² for a Medium pocket, 445.5 for a Small, 283.5 for a Mini.

You fill the pocket at home, so the weight never goes on a lorry.

Nothing green spends three days in a box on your account.
1999
the year the first banner became a bag
Demano has recut Barcelona’s banners ever since. Your pocket inherits 27 years of practice.
Design decisions Four choices that keep a canvas out of the bin.
Material 1999 The pocket outlives the poster.
Banner PVC is printed vinyl on a polyester mesh, built to hold colour through months of weather on a lamppost. That toughness makes it excellent at carrying wet soil for years. Recutting it is the highest use anyone has found for the material.
For you: colours and print fragments differ per pocket, so yours arrives unrepeatable.
Shipping 2026 Hardware travels, life stays local.
The canvas leaves as a board, a pocket and its fixings. Your plant comes from a grower near you and goes straight onto the wall, which is why nothing arrives wilted and nothing gets posted out as a replacement.
For you: one trip to a garden centre, and you choose exactly what grows.
Repair Ongoing One worn part costs one part.
A board, a sewn pocket and a few pieces of steel come apart with a screwdriver. Every fixing is a standard size, so a lost hook is a two euro walk rather than a new canvas. Write to us and we will work out which part you need.
For you: a canvas that stays on the wall through a house move and a repaint.
Fixing Ongoing One hole, and the wall is yours again.
The board hangs by a slot near its top on one anchored hook, the way a shelf does. Lift it off and you fill one hole, with no adhesive residue and nothing left behind in the plaster.
For you: drill once and the canvas moves to any wall you like afterwards.
A banner sells an exhibition for three weeks. The PVC it is printed on holds its colour for decades. We build for the second number.

Targets What we are aiming for.
Four commitments with a date on them. We will publish progress against each one on this page, and name the year we miss.
-
A full lifecycle assessment by 2028.
Cradle to grave, covering the board, the pocket and the journey to your door. We will show the method alongside the result so you can argue with the arithmetic.
-
Every part orderable on its own by 2027.
A published spare parts list with prices, so a torn pocket or a lost hook is a small order rather than a decision about the whole canvas.
-
This design in production for ten years.
One product, no seasonal redesign. A pocket bought in 2036 will still fit a board bought in 2026, which is the only thing that makes a spare parts list worth anything.
-
Repair and return numbers published yearly from 2027.
How many canvases came back, what failed, and what we changed because of it. A repair rate is the honest measure of whether an object is built to last.
End of life When something wears out.
01 Send us a photograph.
Most failures are a screw, a hook or a tired pocket. Tell us what happened and we will tell you which part fixes it, usually the same day.
02 Replant instead of replacing.
A plant that has outgrown 1.8 litres is doing well, not failing. Cut it back, divide it, or start something new in the same pocket.
03 Separate it with a screwdriver.
Wood, PVC and steel come apart in about a minute, so each material reaches the right stream instead of travelling as one unsortable object.
